Chiang Mai (6th November 2011)

So today is my first full day in Thailand and Chiang Mai – what to do? My trips are usually a whirlwind of going from one place to another, do it all and see it all, but this time I’m hoping for a bit of a chill out and a relax, I need a chill out and relax.

So when the alarm went off at 9am I actually kept pressing snoozing till around 11! Not sure of any bonus on this idea but at the time it made me feel better. That was until it became clearly apparent that the worst time of day to be walking around any place in SE Asia was midday! Its ok I can do this, so with a bottle of water and my ‘how not to get robbed bag’ I headed off into the sunset or down the road as it’s known here! My plan today was to just have a wander around, get my bearings and see where I was.

Fortunately I’m within the old city walls and moat area and in a really quiet area which is the best part. If, and that’s a very big IF, I was after a party I would want to go to it and not for it to come to me!

Chiang Mai seems to be a nice city, not too busy but with things going on all the same.

Sunday is walking market day, although I should point out it’s not the market that walks but the people and very very slow! I’ve been to a few markets over the years, touristy and non touristy but this has got to be the busiest by miles. It took me two hours to walk from one end to the next and back again. Two hours!! I was jet lagged, hot and tired and as it was day one I really couldn’t buy anything, but really two hours?! Wow!

What I did find though that totally transfixed me was the stall selling bugs……of all descriptions! Grasshopper, mole cricket, worms and what to me looked like cockroaches!

Think I’ll stick to the spring rolls sold by the different wats as you made your way up the street. It was at that point, as well as a million others, that I thought YAY I so love the food here.
