London to Chiang Mai (4th November 2011)

Ok, here I go! It took me all of about 20 mins to pack last night, that’s the only bit I am getting good at. Although I think I might regret the extra vest tops, I normally have just trekking gear but this time I’ve opted for a couple of nice tops as well, just in case the (or any) opportunity arises.

Thankfully I managed to get a flight out of and back into Gatwick I think certainly as a family and I would imagine as a nation we really dislike Heathrow, too far and too big. I also manage to get a lunch time flight out which saves the horridness of a really early morning.

So fortune shines on us, that was until dad and Jen turn up at 10am to find I’ve just got out of the shower and still have the towel wrapped around my head to prove it. For some reason whenever I do these trips I always think I have all the time in the world. I’ve almost been caught out a couple of times but once again luck is on our side, it’s a clear run up and we end up with a couple of hours to spare.

By the time I went through security though time was ticking down and I didn’t even have time to get a little local currency before the flight. Flashing before me is the Dutch trip, the train journey, the no money, the nearly getting thrown off the train and having to barter with an American guy on changing pounds to Gilders. Remember Pete? Oh how we laughed!!

So just another 24 hours and 3 flights till I get to Chiang Mai, tell me again why I do this?

Flight number 1 was pretty empty and I had a row of four to myself but of course at that time I wasn’t tired, didn’t sleep and just wanted to catch up on some movies (although what I saw who knows!). The other 2 flights were fine but busier, even my first experience of Air Asia was a good one.

On arriving in Chiang Mai I thought I might be a bit clever and get my taxi ticket while we were waiting for our bags, cunning, or so I thought. It seems it doesn’t matter which order you buy the ticket it just matters which order you arrive at the taxi rank. Then because they apparently don’t have many taxis we’re all going to share which is totally fine but we all also have to pay per original price. So they get double the money for half the journeys! At this point I wasn’t sure I cared that much, I agreed to anything and was soon on my way.

I arrived at my guesthouse 25 hours after I had left home, sleep is now in order, but only after a very short explore! ;-)
