Melaka (3rd December 2011)

An attractive building in Melaka
Today I have a full day in Melaka so time for the sights.

When I was here last year with Mick I was still a bit jetlagged and still trying to deal with the heat so it’s nice to visit the places we saw before but in a slightly different light.

Melakas sights

Melaka has some fantastic old buildings a couple of which have now been made in to museums so I visited them and then visited St Pauls Church which is up a sweaty few stairs, in actual fact it really isn’t that many stairs but in this heat it might as well be a mountain. From the top though you really get an idea of the city and while I was up there I also saw the Menara Taming Sari which is an 80m revolving tower which I fancy going on so head off to see what that’s all about.

More Melaka sights

There’s an awful lot of people in the city today which I’m assuming are mainly the tourists from Singapore, it’s really busy here though, families and couples everywhere, it’s quite tiring trying to get though everyone as you walk along the street.

After a busy day wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere I popped back to the hostel for a shower and change before heading back out for a bite to eat and then the plan was to take a river cruise as well as go on the tower. Little had I thought that all the other hundreds of tourists were planning exactly the same thing! The queue for the boat was around 250 people where as the queue for the tower was only about 60! So the tower got first visit in the hope that the boat trip would then be quieter.

The tower was fun but the queue took around 40 minutes and after that not only was I pretty shattered but the boat trip still had a massive queue so instead I opted out of that and went for another look around the market before bed for an attempted early morning….wish me luck!
